From all over Greece people come to Karpenisi for its foods.  Know for its fresh mountain meats (especially it's sausages called loukanika and lamp chops called padakia) and deep panned "pites" one never goes away hungry or unsatisfied.  Although there are restaurants in Karpenisi (some of which we have listed) it is more in character (by the locals) to go to a village outside town to truly "experience" the traditional dining.  Some recommendations:

Petalo - about 1.5 kilometers past neo Mikro Xorio is the tiny roadside village of Gavros.  Visit this incredible "meat lovers" paradise -- a bit pricey but worth it.  +30 (22370) 41487   Make sure to order "xoriatika loukanika" (village sausages) and lamb chops. 

Lapas - Located in the historic and stoned village of Korischades is an excellent restaurant (also has an inn).  The food and atmosphere are highly recommended.

Mathes - Located in the town of Klafsio at its cute "piazza" is a restaurant with a great atmosphere.  Very typical of the region with excellent food.

To Steki - Located in the same town of Klafsio (KLAVSI) +30 (22370) 21215 is a tiny "fast food" style restaurant with outstanding padakia (lamb chops).  A must experience for eating non-commercialized Greek food.

Yiorgalis - This taverna is located in Karpenisi itself.  [ Karaeskaki 23 +30 (22370) 22354 ]  Seat yourself near the fire and enjoy the food.

Kasmir - Located next to the Saloon (across from 2nd EKO on the road from Karpenisi towards Mikro Xorio).  This bar/restaurant offers seating during the summer around two pools with panoramic views of the valley and mountain peaks.  During winter enjoy the exotic interiors.

Agnantio - Located in Goryianadis (right turn just before 1st EKO gas station from Karpenisi towards Mikro Xorio).  This is a neo-classical restaurant perched with panaromic views in a stone village.  Excellent food.  Weather permitting, eat out in the verenda.

esi oti pis - This taverna is located in Karpenisi .  [ corner of Kafantari & Karaiskaki  +30 (22370) 24080 www.esyotpeis.gr ]   The stone interior is matched by the stone exterior.  Very traditional with excellent food.
