Under the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire that enslaved Greece for close to 400 years meticulous records were kept of the enslaved.  Major lifetime events were recorded: births, marriages and deaths.   On Greece's liberation from the Turks (commenced in 1821), some records were destroyed in the revolutionary war, others for one reason or another were lost over the subsequent century.   However, the catastrophe that wiped out almost all records in Karpenisi (and Evritania as a whole) was the Greek Civil War (right after World War II.)  All official records were lost.

Once the Civil War was over the government funded all the villages with monies to reconstruct their "demotologia" (town records).  Best efforts were made but the sad fact is that the entries for each family ("merides") were made  only for those currently living at that time.  So imagine that in 1955, when many records were rebuilt, it meant only capturing people who were up to 80 to 100 years old - in other words, the records typically do not go further back than 1850.  Most are concentrated in recording their merides from the 1880s and afterwards.  Furthermore, guesses were made on dates (most birth years were correct but actually birth dates were wild guesses at best.)

Starting in the early 2000s, Evritania took the steps of consolidating and digitizing the "reconstituted" records.  The old "demotologia" are now kept in the "demoarxio" (town hall) and they have all been computerized.  Eventually all of Greece will allow for online access to a centralized database - thus affording individuals the same abilities to research their genealogy as Western Europeans and North Americans have.

Finding one's roots up to the 1850s will eventually become a simple process, but the major hang up will be trying to research anything prior to this (at least for Evritano's because their records were "lost".   However, somewhere someone might have clues that will help others find their roots; this could include diaries, notes in Bibles or books, or in letters.    So what we are asking our fellow Evritani is to take a moment and look at a list of genealogy questions left by those searching their roots.  If you have any information that could help the "researcher" please email them with the clues or answers.  Thank you for your assistance.
